El Paso’s Best Shopping Malls

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

El Paso, Tx is a small city and there are only a few places to shop pleasurably. Both the east and west side of town have shopping malls with popular stores. Cielo Vista Mall and Sunland Park Mall are both great places to shop. If you’re trying to shop on a budget Downtown and the Discount Mall are better places to shop.

Cielo Vista Mall is located at 8401 Gateway West on the east side and Sunland Park Mall located at 750 Sunland Park Drive on the west side. Usually these malls are packed on weekends. These malls consists of stores such as F.Y.E., Bath and Body Works, Dillards, and J.C. Penny. Their food courts consists of McDonalds,Steakpedos and the usual. Both malls have massaging chairs and benches for you to rest if you are tired of walking around. Unfortunately these malls don’t have designer stores such as Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. They do have a few like Coach, Bebe, and Ambercrombie & Fitch. For more information on these malls go to www.simon.com

The Discount Mall which is located at 5631 Dyer St. has an open market outside where you can buy knock offs for a cheap price. Downtown also gives you the same pleasure of cheap prices. It may not be comfortable because you are walking outside in the hot sun, but you still get the benefit of saving money. At both locations you can find elegant dresses for Prom, Homecoming, and other special occasions and not have to spend hundreds of dollars. You can get a pair of cute sunglasses for 8 dollars and a pair of colored contacts for 15 dollars. They also have a large variety of home decor., jewelry, toys, shoes, and more.

Fun In The Sun At Western Playland

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

For those of you who don’t know, Western Playland has been serving El Paso for over 47 years. It is a small amusement park, and doesn’t have many rides, but it is better than nothing at all. western playland1However, it is a fun place to take children. It can be an exciting family outing, and a good way of getting out of the house.

The prices are very fair. For unlimited rides there is a fee of $15.95 plus tax, which is the price for adults and children. Children under 2 and elders over 60 recieve a free Non-Rider admission. They still get to ride the train and skyride free of charge. The Non-rider fee is only $7.00. That is a very good price for anyone who wants to take the kids, but doesn’t neccessarily want to ride. Western Playland has child rides, family rides, and a few thrill rides. The thrill rides are not very thrilling to me, but someone may find them to be very exciting or fun. The most thrilling ride is the Drop Zone. It is a 90 foot tall ride which slowly raises you to the top and drops you straight down at up to 35 mph.

Western Playland also lets people and organizations reserve the park in advanced. They take reservations for birthday parties, schools, fundraisers, and even groups of over 100 people. They have different prices depending on the group that you are trying to reserve for. westernplayland2

So if you are feeling bored, or just want to get the children out of the house take a trip to Western playland. The best part of it all is that you won’t have to break the bank. They have different opening and closing times depending on the day. Take some time and look at the website www.westernplayland.com for more information.

El Paso Nightlife: Club 101

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Club 101
For anyone who is looking for a good time, club 101 is the spot to be. They cater to many different types of people. Different nights of the week bring a different theme. I personally enjoy Thursday night, but I’m sure there are folks who will love something different.

Thursday-Hit FM Ladies Night, DJ Johnny Kage, Ladies 21 and over get in free (that’s my favorite part), $2 drink specials, Dance/House music, Hip Hop, and reggaeton.

Friday-Country Night with DJ Adrian

Saturday-Retro Night with Joe and Cesar

A warning to all, the $2 drink special is never good. It’s going to be a drink that no one likes, or that everyone is tired of. Beer drinkers have it easy, because beer is fairly cheap. For anyone who likes a variety of drinks, they are pretty expensive. Exotic shots can start around $7. Thursday night is always a full house. So everyone should try to show up early before the bar gets too crowded. For individuals who love to dance, I’m sad to say that the dance floor gets extremely packed, hot, and sticky. So if you don’t like being in close proximity to people thursday night is not for you. Friday and Saturday night are usually tamer. Less people, less conflict. On occasion Club 101 does host different events, which can bring a crowd in. They have their own myspace page and the website www.club101.com.

4th of July Festivities

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

fireworks
It seems that El Paso doesn’t hold many 4th of July festivities. It’s not because the city is boring or anything. It’s just because the way we El Paso natives do it. We prefer to just barbeque and party in the backyard. For the ones who don’t want to clean up after people, they head to the movies. Yes the movie theatre’s are always packed on 4th of July. The reason I know is because, yes, I have been to the movies for my 4th of July holiday. Some people may think it’s lame, but obviously alot of people beg to differ.

One of the few 4th of July activities that I know is going on this year is the celebration at Cohen Stadium. That’s the stadium where the local minor league baseball team plays. The team is named The Diablos. Every year there is a celebration where they shoot fireworks, serve food and all that good stuff. The thing about the Cohen Stadium celebration is that you don’t even have to go to the actual celebration to enjoy the fireworks. Everyone I know just parks their cars around the area at the time that the celebration is going to occur, and watches the fireworks for free. Another plus of watching from the outside is the fact that you don’t have to deal with the crowd. Another festivity that people may look forward to is the Chamizal National Memorial Park celebration. They will have the symphony orchestra playing music, and of course will have the festive fireworks. This celebration starts at 7:30 pm. For more information you can contact the park at (915) 532-7273. Now if you are a morning person, their will be two parades hosted at 9:00 am. One is going to be on the east side of town starting at Hanks High School, off of Lee Trevino. The other will be hosted on the west side of town starting at Thunderbird and Shadow Mountain.

If none of this sounds good, you can always stick to the traditional barbeque.
